In an unsettling incident, a teenager from Norway was arrested in a hotel room in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, while carrying a loaded Luger pistol and a revolver.
The arrest took place on March 19, when firearms officers detained 18-year-old Johannes Kongsnes Natland, who was later linked to a broader investigation.
Counter Terrorism Command Takes Over
The case quickly caught the attention of Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command, a specialist unit that focuses on threats such as espionage and dangers from hostile states.
Though the investigation is ongoing, authorities are delving into the circumstances behind the weapons possession and the potential motives at play.
Court Appearance and Charges
Natland, a resident of Stavanger, Norway, appeared today in court via videolink from Wormwood Scrubs.
Wearing a grey tracksuit, he confirmed his identity and understood the proceedings without needing an interpreter.
He is facing charges for possessing a Luger 9mm semi-automatic pistol, a revolver, and ammunition.
Investigations Still Ongoing
Mrs. Justice Cheema-Grubb, overseeing the case, stated that it would remain in the terrorism case management list as investigations continue both in the UK and abroad.
While no conspiracy to murder charges have been filed, authorities have not disclosed any details about possible targets.
The judge acknowledged that the situation might be confusing for Natland, especially considering his young age, and reassured him that his solicitors were working independently on his behalf.
Upcoming Court Dates
The case is expected to be heard by a High Court judge at Nottingham Crown Court, with a trial date still to be determined.
Natland has been remanded into custody and will appear at the Old Bailey for a further hearing on June 6.
Ongoing Investigation
While Scotland Yard has emphasized that the investigation is not being treated as terrorism-related at this time, it is being handled by Counter Terrorism Policing, with additional support from North East Counter Terrorism Policing and West Yorkshire Police.
Authorities have indicated that further inquiries are still underway, including international lines of investigation.
