Northern Elders Forum Warns Against Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Interference in National Assembly Leadership

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has issued a warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him not to interfere in the leadership selection of the 10th National Assembly (NASS).

A division has emerged among lawmakers and top chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding the leadership positions within the NASS.

Controversy over Leadership Positions:

Reports indicate that the APC leadership, with Tinubu’s support, has endorsed Senator Godswill Akpabio and three others for key positions in the National Assembly.

However, some lawmakers are advocating for different candidates, such as Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, and Senator Sani Musa, among others.

NEF Opposes Interference:

Speaking on a Channels Television program, NEF spokesperson Hakeem Baba-Ahmed expressed the Northern Elders Forum’s opposition to President Tinubu’s involvement in the National Assembly leadership tussle.

Baba-Ahmed emphasized the importance of allowing the members of the National Assembly to choose their own leaders, without external imposition.

Advocating for Legislative Independence:

The NEF firmly believes that the National Assembly deserves respect and autonomy in selecting its leaders.

Baba-Ahmed emphasized that legislators are responsible individuals who were elected by the people, and as such, they should be trusted to exercise their judgment in determining what is best for the country and the legislature.

Baba-Ahmed reiterated that it would not be in President Tinubu’s best interest to impose leadership on the legislators.

He emphasized that it is crucial for the president to maintain distance from the tussle over the senate presidency, highlighting the need for the decision to be made freely and fairly by the legislators themselves.
