Nishesh Basavareddy’s first round clash against 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic on the prestigious Rod Laver Arena was a remarkable experience, despite the young player’s loss.
Basavareddy fought hard but ultimately fell short, losing 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Though the result wasn’t in his favor, the match left him with a lot of lessons and optimism for the future.
A Memorable Experience Against Djokovic
For Basavareddy, taking a set off Djokovic was a significant achievement.
The 19-year-old expressed how special it was to win a set against one of the best players in tennis history.
“Winning the first set against someone like Djokovic was something really cool and shows me that I have the level going forward,” he said.
The experience of playing in front of nearly 15,000 fans on such a big stage was also something new for him. “Just the walkout was really cool.
Seeing 15,000 fans cheering for both him and me was amazing,” Basavareddy recalled.
It was a moment he’ll never forget.
A Whirlwind of Tennis Experiences
Basavareddy reflected on the past few weeks of his tennis journey, describing them as both a “dream and a whirlwind.”
He started his journey in Jeddah, where he played his first tour event, marking a new chapter in his career.
Following that, he played in ATP Tour events in Brisbane and Auckland, gaining invaluable match experience against top-level opponents.
He also had the chance to play against Gaël Monfils, a player he’s admired for years.
“I’ve watched a lot of Monfils on TV, and to play against him was a huge confidence booster going into this week,” he shared.
A Fan’s Perspective on Playing Djokovic
It’s no secret that Basavareddy is a huge fan of Novak Djokovic.
He couldn’t help but admit that the whole experience felt surreal. “The coin toss was a little surreal.
Just seeing him in front of me, knowing we’re going to compete today—it was a really cool feeling,” he said with a smile.
Lessons Learned from the Match
While Djokovic came out victorious, Basavareddy was quick to highlight the factors that made a big difference in the match.
The accuracy of Djokovic’s serving and his quick returns were the standout features.
“His accuracy on serve was something special.
And the way he returns serves so quickly really made a difference in the match,” Basavareddy explained.
“It felt like I was serving, and the ball was already back at me.
You don’t realize how quick he is until you’re actually playing against him.”
Basavareddy acknowledged that Djokovic’s experience and consistency were key in the match, but he also took away valuable lessons for his own game.
Support from Experienced Coaches
Basavareddy is fortunate to have a coach with Grand Slam experience in his corner—Rajeev Ram, a six-time Grand Slam doubles champion.
Ram has been a huge help in Basavareddy’s preparation, offering insight into what to expect from the match and advice on how to manage a three-out-of-five set format.
“Having someone with that much experience supporting me has been amazing,” Basavareddy said. “He’s played Djokovic in doubles and faced many of the players I’m playing against now.
It’s been incredibly helpful.”
Basavareddy also had the unique experience of seeing Andy Murray, Djokovic’s coach, passionately support the Serbian star from the sidelines.
“It was surreal seeing Andy Murray cheering for Novak so enthusiastically.
It was hard not to notice, but I tried to stay focused on the game,” he shared.
