Theresa Sappor, a Lagos-based caterer, says her life and business have been transformed after preparing Nigerian jollof rice for American online streamer iShowSpeed.
The experience, she tells The Plug, felt almost miraculous.
“This Jollof rice, na Holy Spirit help me cook am.
I’m still in shock. Social media get power.
Whether we like it or not, Nigerians have good food,” she said, recalling the moment that has now gone viral.
Freedom Park Restaurant Becomes a Global Attraction
Sappor runs Sappor Cuisine at Freedom Park, the historic colonial prison turned tourist attraction on Lagos Island.
The restaurant has seen a surge in visitors, including a customer who had never stepped foot into Freedom Park before but came specifically to try the jollof rice iShowSpeed had tasted.
“She said she has never been here, but she came because of iShowSpeed.
We prepared the Jollof rice he ate when he came to Nigeria.
I tell everybody I have the best cook in the world,” Sappor said, proudly adding that her love for cooking started at age 12 and was inspired by her mother-in-law, who is also a caterer.
A Viral Moment Watched by Millions
Her husband, who co-founded the restaurant, emphasized the scale of the livestreamed encounter. “While he was eating it, over one million people were watching.
Lots of expatriates visit this place. They want egusi and fufu.
They enjoy it and come back for more,” he said.
During the livestream, iShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., praised the Nigerian jollof rice: “I am not gonna lie, this is good.
I think I might have to go with Nigeria.”
His enthusiastic reaction sparked waves of excitement online and put Sappor Cuisine in the spotlight globally.
A Life-Changing Experience for the Caterer
Sappor described the encounter as life-changing. “It has received a global visitation.
iShowSpeed, thank you! I know how to cook the best egusi soup too.
Thank you for raising people.
God will bless you. And God will also raise you up.”
The event not only highlighted the quality of Nigerian cuisine but also drew attention to the vibrancy of Freedom Park, where iShowSpeed mingled with skaters, dancers, and performers, trying out Nigerian dance moves and marveling at unicyclists and skateboarders.
iShowSpeed Continues His Africa Tour
After his Lagos visit, iShowSpeed traveled to Ghana, where he sampled Ghanaian jollof rice in a massive pot, sparking the playful culinary rivalry between the two countries.
Moments after tasting the Ghanaian version, he jokingly declared again that he might have to “go with the Nigerian one,” reigniting online debates among fans.
Ghanaian YouTuber Wode Maya later revealed that the huge jollof rice stunt was arranged at iShowSpeed’s request for a visually striking experience for his global audience.
Lagos Welcomes the Global Star
iShowSpeed’s Africa tour, which began on December 29, 2025, spans 28 days across 20 countries.
His arrival in Lagos drew massive crowds, with residents, traders, and passersby running alongside his convoy, waving and filming the popular streamer as he navigated the bustling city streets.
For Sappor Cuisine, the exposure has been unprecedented.
The humble caterer’s skill, now credited to the “Holy Spirit,” has introduced her food to an international audience, proving once again that Nigerian cuisine can captivate the world.
