Social media users in Nigeria have been put on high alert after a spike in fake accounts claiming to belong to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
These fraudulent accounts are reportedly being used to trick unsuspecting members of the public.
Army Confirms No Official Social Media Presence
The Nigerian Army, through a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, clarified on its X account on Friday that Lieutenant General Shaibu does not operate any official social media accounts on any platform.
The Army stressed that any account claiming to be him is fake and should be ignored.
Fake Accounts Used for Scams and Misinformation
The Army warned that these fake profiles are often tools for fraud, including soliciting funds or spreading false information in the name of the Nigerian Army.
Citizens were urged to be cautious, avoid interacting with such accounts, and remain vigilant against potential scams.
Legal Action Is Underway Against Fraudsters
Authorities revealed that steps are being taken to track down those behind the fake accounts, with the goal of prosecuting them according to Nigerian law.
The Army emphasized that engaging with these accounts could put individuals at risk of criminal activity.
Commitment to Protecting Nigerians Remains Strong
Finally, the statement reassured the public that the Nigerian Army remains dedicated to protecting citizens’ lives and property, as well as defending the country’s territorial integrity, in full alignment with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
