Nigeria showcased an attacking masterclass as they stormed past Mozambique, securing a commanding 4–0 victory at Fez Stadium.
The Super Eagles delivered one of their most dominant performances of the tournament, leaving no doubts about their intent to go deep in the competition.
Super Eagles Take Control Early
From the opening whistle, Nigeria set the pace.
The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman capitalized on Akor Adams’ precise setup, slotting the ball home from close range.
The early goal set the tone, and the team never looked back.
Just five minutes later, Victor Osimhen doubled the advantage.
Showing his trademark sharpness in the box, Osimhen reacted quickest to a deflected assist from Adams, giving Nigeria a strong grip on the match before halftime.
Second Half Dominance Seals the Deal
The Super Eagles returned from the break with relentless energy.
Osimhen struck again almost immediately, turning in Lookman’s delivery to make it 3–0.
That goal crushed any hope Mozambique had of mounting a comeback, as Nigeria’s pace and fluid attacking movement proved overwhelming.
Akor Adams put the finishing touch on a superb team display in the 75th minute.
Racing onto a counter-attack, he fired a brilliant shot into the top corner after another assist from Lookman, completing the rout and highlighting the squad’s attacking depth.
Extending a Legacy of Consistency
This victory not only sent Nigeria into the quarter-finals but also reinforced their impressive AFCON record.
The Super Eagles have now reached the knockout rounds for the 18th time and have progressed beyond the group stage for 16 consecutive tournaments—the last time they failed was in 1982.
Under coach Eric Chelle, Nigeria arrived at the knockout stage unbeaten in the group, defeating Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.
This emphatic win eases any concerns from past tournaments where strong starts didn’t translate into long runs.
Scoring Records and Statistics
The four-goal haul elevated Nigeria to 62 Africa Cup of Nations victories, the second-highest in the tournament’s history, just behind Egypt.
With 11 goals scored so far, they are the tournament’s most prolific team and have now scored in 11 consecutive AFCON matches, extending their longest scoring streak in the competition.
Looking Ahead
Nigeria will face either Algeria or DR Congo in the quarter-finals.
Should they maintain this impressive form, a semi-final showdown against tournament hosts Morocco or five-time champions Cameroon could be on the horizon.
The Super Eagles have reached the quarter-finals 12 times since the stage was introduced in 1992, failing to progress only once.
With momentum firmly on their side, Nigeria fans can dream big as the tournament enters its most intense phase.
