The Nigeria Police Force has stepped forward to clear the air following reports that N100 million was deposited into the personal account of Victor Egbetokun, son of outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The force described the payment as an unintentional banking error that was quickly rectified.

According to the Force’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the transfer was promptly reversed once Victor noticed the deposit.

The clarification comes after online claims suggested that the funds originated from the Anambra State Government’s security vote account.

How the Error Came to Light

Speaking on the Channels Television programme Politics Today, Hundeyin recounted the sequence of events.

“You could remember when he (Omoyele Sowore) said N100 million was paid into the account of the son of the IGP.

I called the son of the IGP immediately to know what was going on, and he explained,” Hundeyin said.

Victor, upon discovering the unexpected deposit, reportedly instructed his accounts officer to reverse the transaction immediately.

Hundeyin added, “He said he saw N100 million in his account, and he told his accounts officer to reverse the money immediately, which he did.”

Verification and Transparency

To confirm the reversal, Victor printed his bank statement and presented it to the police.

Hundeyin emphasized that Victor was cooperative and transparent throughout the process.

“The young man was forced to close down that account.

He has written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for that allegation to be investigated,” the spokesperson stated.

The police force emphasized that the matter was handled properly and that the funds were restored to the state government’s account shortly after the mistake was noticed.

Hundeyin stressed, “This was a banking error.

There was no wrongdoing involved, and it was simply a case of mistaken payment.”

Context and Public Reaction

The incident sparked a flurry of online speculation, particularly because of the size of the amount involved and the prominent status of Victor’s father.

Critics raised concerns about accountability and the handling of security vote funds by state governments.

While the police have assured the public that the matter is resolved, the controversy has reignited calls for stronger oversight of financial transactions involving public funds in Nigeria.

What’s Next?

The next step involves a formal investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into the allegation to provide transparency and reassure the public that no public money was misappropriated.

Victor’s proactive steps — including reversing the payment and submitting documentation — are expected to help clarify the situation during the investigation.

Authorities are also likely to review banking protocols to prevent similar mistakes in the future, particularly when large transfers involving public funds are involved.

The police have indicated that they will continue to provide updates as the EFCC investigates.

Summary

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that the N100 million transferred to Victor Egbetokun’s personal account was a banking error, not a deliberate misappropriation.

Victor, son of outgoing IGP Kayode Egbetokun, noticed the deposit, instructed his accounts officer to reverse it, and provided evidence of the reversal to the police.

The funds have since been restored to the Anambra State Government’s account.

The EFCC is expected to investigate the incident further, ensuring full transparency and accountability, while the police maintain that no wrongdoing occurred.
