In a transformative wave, more Nigerians are transitioning to advanced 4G and 5G networks, thanks to substantial infrastructure investments by major telecom operators like MTN and Airtel.
Connectivity Revolution: MTN and Airtel Drive 4G and 5G Adoption Nationwide with Unprecedented Network Growth
MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Karl Toriola, revealed that the deployment of 4G sites witnessed a notable 2.7% growth, elevating 4G usage among customers from 79.1% to 81.5%. Simultaneously, the expansion of MTN’s 5G sites soared from 588 to 2,106, catapulting 5G penetration from 3.1% to 11.3%.
Airtel has also joined the fray, deploying 5G networks in Lagos, Abeokuta, and is actively testing in Oshogbo.

Telecom giants MTN Nigeria and Airtel Africa collectively invested a staggering ₦613 billion by the end of 2022 to bolster their 4G and 5G networks.
MTN contributed N504.33 billion to its network rollout, while Airtel invested N108.79 billion. The surge in smartphone shipments, especially 4G and 5G-enabled devices, witnessed a 12% growth in 2023.

By January 2024, TECNO emerged as the leader in the smartphone vendor market with 26.03%, followed by Infinix at 20.88%.
