In a major development, Nick Read, the CEO of the Post Office, is stepping down from his role in March.
The company announced this morning that Neil Brocklehurst, the current interim chief operating officer, will step in as acting CEO.
A Challenging Tenure
Nick Read, who took over as CEO in 2019, will be leaving his position amidst ongoing issues related to the Horizon IT scandal.
Earlier this year, he had already begun to distance himself from daily operations to focus on the Horizon inquiry.
Before Read, Paula Vennells led the Post Office but lost her CBE this year due to public criticism over her management of the scandal.
Acknowledgments and Reflections
In his departure statement, Read reflected on his time as CEO, calling it a “great privilege” to lead the Post Office through such challenging times.
He acknowledged the difficult period for both the business and its postmasters.
Nigel Railton, the interim chair of the Post Office, commended Read for initiating “important cultural changes” within the organization as it continues to grapple with the fallout from the Horizon scandal.
Ongoing Challenges
Read emphasized that while much work remains to be done to rebuild trust and support justice for the postmasters affected by the scandal, significant progress has been made.
Between 1999 and 2015, over 700 sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses were wrongfully prosecuted and imprisoned due to flawed data used by the Post Office.
Controversies and Future Directions
Read faced criticism earlier for a letter defending the Post Office’s stance on prosecuting some of the wrongfully convicted sub-postmasters.
As the Post Office moves forward, the focus will be on addressing these past mistakes and continuing efforts to support the affected individuals.
