The rising cases of crime and violence in the South-East geopolitical zone has been attributed to intake of Methamphetamine, also known as Mkpurummiri, among the youths.
This is the belief of participants at a road show organized by a nongovernmental organization, Illicit Drug Abuse Education in collaboration with National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and Eziowelle Youth Forum, held in Eziowelle, Idemili North Local Government Area.
Queen Anigbogu reports that the founder of the nongovernmental organization, Chief Anene Onyiliegbe, said the essence of the road show was to sensitize the youth of the community of the dangers of mkpurummili.
He commended Governor Willie Obiano for his efforts in reducing the percentage of substance abuse in the State and appealed to public spirited individuals and groups to join forces with the nongovernmental organization to fight the monster Mkpurummili.
Earlier, the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Michael Okonkwo-Etusi, regretted the negative effects of the drug on human body which can lead to madness and death, and charged the organizers to take the sensitization programme to every corner of the community.
Also speaking the youth leader of Eziowelle, Mr Ugochukwu Asikwo, advised the youths to desist from taking the substance for their own good disclosing that any youth caught in the act will be arrested and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for prosecution.
For the Headteacher of Uzubi Primary School, Eziowelle,Mrs Christiana Udoh, and an indigene of the community, Mrs Louisa Aniekwe-Obinwa, Mkpurummili intake would be reduced under certain conditions.
They said government should provide jobs for the unemployed while parents should give their children good home up bringing and stringent measures must be applied in dealing with manufacturers and dealers in mkpurummili.
