Newport, Oregon police warn of ‘explosive’ hand grenades washing ashore

The Newport, Oregon, police department has issued a warning concerning hand grenades found on the city’s beach.

The Newport Police Department stated in a press release dated October 5 that it had received “several reports” of the devices appearing on a beach between Yaquina Bay State Park and Agate Beach.

Officers discovered three devices that appeared to have washed ashore, according to the news release. According to the agency, the Oregon State bomb team was deployed and removed the explosives from the beach.

A image of the explosive grenade issued by the department depicted a white container marked “WARNING: EXPLOSIVE.” The object’s label additionally identifies it as a “simulator hand grenade M116A1” and includes usage instructions.

Such devices are often employed in military training exercises to replicate grenade explosions in order to familiarize soldiers with the appearance and sound of genuine grenades in action.
