In a chilling new revelation, bodycam footage has surfaced showing a suspect allegedly guiding police to the location where five-year-old Michael Vaughan’s body is buried.
Stacey Wondra, a key figure in the investigation, is heard directing detectives to his property, where he claims his wife, Sarah, buried Michael in 2021.
The footage was recorded during an interrogation on November 12, 2022, and was released this month after Michael’s mother, Brandi Neal, and a family friend managed to obtain it via a public records request.
The Search for Michael Vaughan
Michael Vaughan, affectionately known as ‘Monkey’ by his family, went missing from the small town of Fruitland, Idaho, on July 27, 2021.
In the video, Stacey Wondra can be heard telling detectives via FaceTime to keep searching further on the property, describing the area where his wife allegedly buried Michael.
“Right under the mound, right to the right of the trees,” he says.
He even specifies that Michael’s body should be wrapped in either a white or black garbage bag, which he believes is the case.
Despite the precise directions provided by Stacey, authorities have been unable to locate Michael’s body at the indicated spot.
Cadaver dogs detected evidence of human remains in the Wondras’ backyard, leading investigators to believe the body may have been moved elsewhere after the initial burial.
Frustration and Questions from Michael’s Family
Michael’s mother, Brandi Neal, expressed her outrage and frustration after the release of the video, noting that there have been no significant developments in the investigation despite the disturbing footage.
She shared her feelings with KTVB, explaining that she wanted to bring more attention to the case, especially since her family has been in limbo for so long.
Though the Fruitland Police Department has confirmed that the video was not released by them or the Payette County Prosecutor’s Office, they are still pursuing leads in the case.
The police department mentioned that a suspect had recently reached out, offering new hope that investigators could finally make progress in the three-year investigation.
The Complexities of the Investigation
While Stacey Wondra’s knowledge of Michael’s supposed burial site is detailed, he continues to deny being involved in the crime, claiming he wants Michael’s remains to be found.
“I am distraught,” Wondra says in the video.
“I want this to be done and over with. This family has suffered way too long.”
Stacey, who is currently in federal custody for violating the conditions of his supervised release, has maintained his innocence in interviews.
His wife, Sarah Wondra, is serving time in prison for unrelated charges, including aggravated assault and destruction of evidence.
The case remains ongoing, and authorities continue to work toward finding answers for Michael’s family.
What’s Next in the Case
The search for Michael Vaughan’s remains continues, and police chief J.D. Huff expressed optimism that the investigation could soon be brought to a close.
With new leads emerging, including a suspect who recently contacted the police, there is hope that answers will finally come to light after more than three years of uncertainty.
