NATO’s Expansion Plans: New 10,000-Troop Base in Romania Signals Heightened Military Presence in Eastern Europe

In a significant strategic development, NATO is poised to establish its largest base in Europe, positioning it in the southeastern region of Romania, in close proximity to Ukraine.

This decision comes amidst escalating tensions in the region and underscores NATO’s commitment to bolstering security in Eastern Europe.

Expansion Plans and Facility Details

The new base, to be situated within the existing Mihail Kogălniceanu facility, will span over an expansive area, encompassing more than 2,300 hectares.

With an estimated construction cost of 2.5 billion euros, the facility is expected to accommodate up to 10,000 military personnel along with their families and support staff.

Operational Timeline and Current Status

Base commander Nicolae Cresu has outlined that the facility is projected to be fully operational by 2040. Currently, there are approximately 3,000 military personnel stationed at the base, with US troops having utilized the Mihail Kogalniceanu base since 1999.

Expansion Works and Infrastructure Development

The initial phase of expansion is slated to be completed within five years, with plans for the construction of additional runway facilities and the enhancement of airport infrastructure underway.

Future development initiatives include the establishment of hangars for military aircraft, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and other amenities essential for a functioning military base.

Increased NATO Presence

The deployment of NATO soldiers at the base saw a significant increase in 2022, with over 1,800 troops, numerous vehicles, and military equipment being transferred to the eastern Romanian base near the Black Sea.

Currently, the base hosts a substantial contingent of NATO forces, including 1,900 US soldiers, alongside French and Belgian military personnel.
