Wife of the Governor of Anambra State and founder of the charity organization, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative, CAFE, Dr Ebelechukwu Obiano has commissioned two toilet projects at Eke Father Market, Owerre-Ezukala, and Afor Enugwu-Umuonyia, Orumba South Local Government Area
The projects, powered by the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, are among the twenty-two built so far by CAFE across rural markets in Anambra State and donated for free.
Correspondent, Daniel Ezeigwe reports that the toilets, which have steady running water and standby power generating sets, are expected to provide decent enclosure for traders, especially market women, and promote hygiene and general cleanliness in the areas.
Speaking at each of the markets, Dr. Obiano, represented by the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Renewal, Architect Mike Okonkwo, thanked the people of the area for voting for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in the November sixth governorship election, assuring that even though her husband’s tenure is officially winding down in March next year, she is still committed to working with CAFÉ beyond politics.
The Governor’s wife, while stating that the projects, along with many other programmes carried out by CAFE, are her own way of supporting her husband’s leadership efforts, asked those who would be taking care of the projects to ensure that they are properly and constantly maintained.
She also noted that her husband would leave office with his shoulders high, having laid a strong foundation for successful leadership in his more than seven years in office.
The Transition Committee Chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area, Chief Cyprian Okereke, in his remark, said the Governor’s wife has effectively used CAFE to set a template for social intervention in Anambra State and beyond.
On his part, the Deputy Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Emeka Ozumba, who is also CAFE’s Project Manager, said through the rural market toilet scheme, Mrs. Obiano aims at giving women sense of decency, as well as show her commitment to stopping hygiene-related sicknesses.
The President General of Owerre-Ezukala, Barrister Anayo Emejuo, his Enugwu-Umuonyia counterpart, Mr. Hillary Mbanusi, said the toilet projects would help greatly in the markets, and praised the Governor’s wife for providing solid support to her husband, Governor Willie Obiano.
The Anambra South Zonal Commander of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA Brigade, Mr. Emmanuel Obi, Traditional rulers and APGA faithful from both towns and market women witnessed the commissioning.
