A Halloween parade in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, turned controversial when the local volunteer fire department featured a float depicting Vice President Kamala Harris in chains.
The unsettling display shocked attendees and quickly led to widespread condemnation from the community, sparking discussions on divisive imagery and political expression.
Float Display Draws Immediate Backlash from Spectators
The float showcased a woman dressed as Harris, chained at the wrists and tethered to a golf cart adorned with a Donald Trump banner.
Accompanying her were two men dressed as Secret Service agents and a third posing as a sniper holding a rifle.
Community members expressed their disapproval of the float, highlighting concerns about the potential for encouraging political animosity and promoting imagery that many found disturbing.
Bipartisan Outcry Against the Display’s Message
Leaders from both political parties spoke out against the parade float.
Bill Bretz, chairman of the Westmoreland County Republican Committee, condemned the display, saying, “We certainly don’t condone this kind of simulation of political imprisonment or violence, regardless of party affiliation.”
Democratic chair Michelle Milan McFall echoed his sentiment, describing the display as “vile” and “concerning.”
She warned that it reflects a heightened climate of anger and divisiveness that’s becoming more prevalent.
Accusations of Racism and Harmful Symbolism
Community advocates, including Daylon Davis, head of the local NAACP, expressed strong concerns over the float’s racial implications.
Davis stated that the imagery harkened back to historical displays of racial oppression and dehumanization.
“This kind of symbolism has no place in any inclusive community and perpetuates dangerous stereotypes,” he remarked. The imagery, according to Davis, undermines values of respect and equality.
Community Leaders and Residents Call for Accountability
Mount Pleasant’s Mayor Diane Bailey expressed deep disappointment, stating she was “appalled, angered, and upset” by the float’s presence in the parade.
Bailey stressed that such displays contradict the values of the town, calling for changes in how community events are planned.
Responding to the backlash, the fire department issued a formal apology, acknowledging the hurt caused by the float.
“We do not share the values represented by those participants,” the statement read, as the department promised to learn from the incident.

Following the outrage, the fire department committed to reviewing their planning procedures, aiming to prevent future incidents like this one.
