Residents of Kliptown in Soweto, south of Johannesburg, have barricaded roads with bricks and burning tyres, according to the Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD).

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the residents are protesting over electricity issues in the area. Fihla has advised motorists to avoid Klipspruit Valley road and instead use alternative routes.

“Klipspruit Valley road in Kliptown between Mojaji and Union Avenue circle, also expect closure on Mojaji street in Pimville between Klipspruit Valley Road and Mgentsani Street and on Union Road in Eldorado Park – between Boundary Road and Buckingham Avenue and this is due to protest action. The situation is currently tense but officers have been deployed.”
