Two men were shot at by two suspects riding a moped in south London, causing the victims’ car to flip as they attempted to flee.
The police were called to the scene on Lyndhurst Way in Peckham at around 6.15pm on Sunday, after a member of the public reported gunfire.
Two male victims were found by the officers, who were reportedly in a car when they were approached by two suspects riding a moped.
The suspects fired a gun at the victims, causing them to try and escape, resulting in their car crashing into another parked vehicle and flipping onto its roof.
One of the victims ran from the scene and attempted to hide in a garden on Ivanhoe Road, but was shot in the process.
The second victim was injured in the car crash, but his injuries were not life-threatening or life-changing.
Police are trying to trace another victim who they believe was in the car when the shooting occurred.
Detective Inspector Mat Freeman of the Met’s Specialist Crime North has appealed to anyone with information or video footage of the incident to come forward.
He also asked for witnesses who were in the area or driving by at the time of the incident to speak up.
He emphasised that any piece of information, no matter how seemingly irrelevant, could be crucial in understanding what happened.
The police are appealing to anyone who has information to call 101 or tweet @MetCC with reference CAD 5646/07MAY23.
Alternatively, information can be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, online or by calling 0800 555 111.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in London, especially in areas that are known to have a high incidence of crime.
The use of mopeds by criminals has become a common method of transport, enabling them to move quickly and evade the authorities.
It is alarming to hear that such violence is taking place in residential areas, putting innocent bystanders at risk.
The police’s appeal for witnesses and information is important in bringing the perpetrators to justice and deterring similar incidents from happening in the future.
