Moderna is suing Pfizer and BioNTech over the COVID-19 vaccine

Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech are being sued by Moderna for allegedly stealing its technology when creating the COVID-19 vaccine.

Moderna asserts that Pfizer and BioNTech breached its intellectual property rights on significant components of its messenger RNA technology, which it had patents on from 2010 to 2016, in filings submitted to U.S. District Court in Massachusetts and Germany.

Shannon Thyme Klinger, chief legal officer of Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Moderna, a biotechnology firm, said in a statement on Friday, “We think that Pfizer and BioNTech unlawfully copied Moderna’s innovations, and they have continued to utilise them without authorization.”

According to a business email, Pfizer has not yet read the lawsuit and was unable to comment on it. A request for comment from BioNTech did not receive a prompt response.

Both the two-shot vaccinations from Moderna and Pfizer use mRNA technology to aid patients in battling the coronavirus. These vaccines function by infusing the genetic material for the spike protein that covers the coronavirus’s surface.
