Fortune Makaringe, a midfielder with a wealth of experience, recently shed light on the special role that former Kaizer Chiefs player Lebogang Manyama has embraced at Cape Town City FC.
Since September 2023, Manyama has taken on the responsibilities of assistant coach under Eric Tinkler, adding a new chapter to his football journey after hanging up his boots.
A Warm Welcome and Transition
After leaving Orlando Pirates, Makaringe made his way to CT City, where Manyama greeted him with open arms.
The 31-year-old midfielder enjoyed a successful stint at the Buccaneers, securing six trophies, including two Nedbank Cup titles, three MTN8 victories, and a Carling Black Label trophy.
He concluded his time at Pirates with 11 appearances and one goal across all competitions before making the switch to the Mother City club at the end of the 2023/24 PSL season.
Manyama’s Impact on the Team
At Cape Town City, Makaringe has reunited with Tinkler, a coach he previously worked with at Maritzburg United.
He has been impressed by the distinct role Manyama plays within the squad. Makaringe describes Manyama as a “linkman,” a role that extends far beyond his days as a player.
“I can vouch for this,” Makaringe shared with FARPost.
“I watched him transition from my early days as an amateur footballer to a professional. I had the chance to compete against him when he played for CT City and Chiefs. Now, he’s my coach.”
Supporting Young Talent
When Makaringe joined the team, Manyama made sure to welcome him warmly, just as the rest of the squad did.
“He’s genuinely a good person,” Makaringe remarked.
“Not long ago, we had a conversation where he emphasized the importance of helping shy players. That’s the significant role he’s taken on for Coach Eric and the team.”
According to Makaringe, Manyama is instrumental in bridging the gap between reserved players and the coaching staff.
“We all have our unique gifts in football, but we express ourselves at different times. Coach Lebo has dedicated himself to uplifting younger players who struggle to share their thoughts with the coach.”
The Role of a Mentor
Manyama’s experience throughout his illustrious career has made him keenly aware of the challenges that players face in expressing themselves.
“He has seen it all,” Makaringe noted, “and he has made it his mission to uplift those who may be timid or unsure.”
Manyama’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment speaks volumes about his character and dedication to the growth of his teammates.
In this new role, Manyama is not just a coach but a mentor, ensuring that every player feels confident and empowered to contribute to the team’s success.
