Michael van Gerwen announces heartbreaking split from wife Daphne and pulls out of Dutch Darts Championship in the Netherlands

In the world of professional darts, few names are as dominant as Michael van Gerwen.

But this week, the three-time world champion made headlines for something far more personal than his performance on the oche.

A Difficult Chapter in His Personal Life

The 36-year-old Dutch darts icon took to social media with a heartfelt message, revealing that he and his wife Daphne have made the painful decision to separate.

After more than a decade together and nearly 11 years of marriage, Van Gerwen shared that he and Daphne are “facing a difficult time” and have mutually chosen to end their relationship.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you that Daphne and I have decided to end our relationship,” he wrote in his statement.

“We are facing a difficult time and ask that you respect our privacy.”

Stepping Away from the Game—for Now

As a result of the separation, Van Gerwen also announced he will be withdrawing from upcoming tournaments, including the Dutch Darts Championship where he was due to compete this weekend.

Apologizing to fans, he acknowledged the disappointment his absence might cause, but asked for understanding given the circumstances.

“I am sorry to disappoint my fans, but I trust that they will understand my decision,” he said.

A Relationship That Spanned Over a Decade

Van Gerwen and Daphne’s story goes back to 2008 when they first started dating.

The couple tied the knot in 2014 and have built a family together.

They share two young children: a seven-year-old daughter, Zoe, and a five-year-old son, Mike.

Their relationship has often been in the spotlight, especially with Van Gerwen’s stature in the darts world, but this recent announcement marks a deeply personal and painful turn in their journey together.

Recent Struggles on the Darts Stage

The news of his personal struggles comes shortly after a disappointing run in the Premier League Darts season.

Van Gerwen, a seven-time champion of the competition, missed out on the play-offs this year after finishing fifth in the standings. Only the top four advance.

It’s been a tough period for the Dutchman both on and off the stage—one that has led him to take a well-deserved break to focus on his family and personal wellbeing.
