Michael Carrick has dismissed suggestions that Manchester United have been handed a gentle opening to the new Premier League season, insisting that facing newly promoted opposition away from home is anything but straightforward.
United begin their campaign at Hull City on Saturday lunchtime before welcoming Ipswich Town to Old Trafford the following weekend.
With both opponents having just earned promotion, some have viewed the opening fixtures as a favourable opportunity for United to make a fast start.
Carrick strongly disagrees.
“There are no favourable starts,” the United boss said, describing the idea as “pretty ridiculous” and warning that his players will face a serious test from the opening whistle.
Hull Represents an Immediate Challenge
Carrick is refusing to look beyond Saturday’s trip to Hull, where United will encounter a newly promoted side playing in front of its home supporters.
The manager believes promoted clubs can be particularly difficult to assess because they often undergo significant changes during the summer.
