Mexican golfer Emilio Gonzalez disqualified after rare rules violation at World Wide Technology Championship ending his tournament hopes in unexpected turn of events

The World Wide Technology Championship took an unexpected turn for Mexican golf star Emilio Gonzalez when he was disqualified for a rare ‘serious misconduct’ violation during his home country’s prestigious tournament.

Although the 27-year-old had hopes of advancing in the tournament, a surprising rule infraction on the 15th hole ultimately led to his removal from the competition.

A Costly Move in the Desert

Gonzalez’s disqualification came down to a split-second decision.

After hitting his tee shot into a desert area on the 15th hole, he chose to play a provisional shot from the tee box as a backup.

When he ventured out to locate his original ball, he found a ball lying in the rough but, in the eyes of the tournament officials, failed to “make reasonable efforts to identify” it.

Instead, he proceeded to play his provisional shot from the fairway.

Rule Violation and Its Consequences

Under PGA rules, if a provisional shot hasn’t yet become the official ball in play and the original ball might have been located, the player must attempt to identify it.

Gonzalez’s choice to bypass this step ultimately led to officials invoking Rule 1.2a, which addresses misconduct contrary to the spirit of the game.

The committee determined that his actions warranted disqualification, a decision only announced after he completed his round.

Scorecard and Aftermath

Despite his setback on the 15th hole, Gonzalez managed to card a one-under-par 71 for the round.

Ironically, his final score left him two shots below the cut line, which meant he wouldn’t have advanced to the weekend rounds regardless.

Reflecting on his experience before learning of the disqualification, Gonzalez expressed to the media that it had been “a week of many emotions.”

Looking Ahead: Redemption at Q School

Though disqualified, Gonzalez did not lose any earnings from the event, and he’ll get another shot at climbing the ranks in next month’s PGA Tour Q School.

With a chance to secure a coveted spot on the main Tour, Gonzalez will aim for a top-five finish to prove that this week’s misfortune is only a stepping stone on his journey.
