Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s philanthropic efforts have recently come under scrutiny after reports revealed that the couple has spent significant amounts of money on left-leaning political operatives through their charity, The Archewell Foundation.
These donations, reportedly totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, have raised concerns, particularly regarding their potential influence on American politics.
Major Donations to Democratic-Aligned Causes
One of the most notable contributions came in 2023 when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex donated $250,000 to Ashley Biden’s Women’s Wellness Space, a charity aimed at supporting women impacted by trauma.
This donation is the largest of several made by the royals in recent years, highlighting their continued support for causes aligned with Democratic values.
Alongside this, Joire Craig, a prominent Democratic disinformation expert, was paid $146,500 by The Archewell Foundation in 2023.
Craig has been considered a key figure in the fight against political disinformation, particularly during the last U.S. presidential election.
Ties to Political Operatives and Strategy
Craig’s expertise in digital strategy and social media manipulation has positioned her as a go-to operative for Democrats.
Before joining Archewell, she worked at Greenberg, Quinlan, and Rosner, a Washington, D.C.-based research firm known for its work with political campaigns.
Her previous efforts focused on counteracting negative perceptions about President Biden’s age and his family during the election.
The funds allocated to Craig and other similar causes have sparked controversy, with some critics questioning the implications of these donations for a royal family that traditionally stays out of political affairs.
Public Tensions and Criticism from Conservatives
These donations have come at a time of heightened political tensions between Prince Harry and conservative figures, especially following his recent public clash with former President Donald Trump.
Trump, in a public statement, noted that he would not seek to deport Prince Harry, citing the prince’s personal issues.
Meanwhile, Harry’s brother, Prince William, met with Trump in December, which fueled even more debates about the Sussexes’ political leanings.
Response from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex
In light of these revelations, some critics, including Nile Gardiner from the Heritage Foundation, have called for Congressional oversight of Meghan and Harry’s charitable donations.
Gardiner emphasized that, as royals, the couple should not be involved in political activities.
However, in response to the backlash, Meghan and Harry’s spokesperson defended their charitable actions, stating that the donations were made to support non-partisan causes, like mental health initiatives, rather than to influence political outcomes.
They insisted that their investments were aimed at making a meaningful difference, rather than advancing any political agenda.
Despite the controversy, The Archewell Foundation has not yet commented publicly on the matter, leaving the royal couple’s intentions open to interpretation.
