This morning, a large and intense lorry fire broke out at the Roundthorn Industrial Estate in Manchester, causing significant disruption.
The fire, which began just after 8 a.m., involved heavy goods vehicles and sent thick, black smoke billowing into the air.
As the flames roared and loud explosions echoed, local residents, including families, were evacuated from nearby homes due to the dangerous conditions.
Emergency Services Respond Quickly
A huge emergency response was launched, with ten fire engines from across Greater Manchester rushing to the scene to battle the blaze.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) quickly confirmed that multiple homes in the vicinity were evacuated due to the high levels of smoke.
Wythenshawe Hospital, located just half a mile away, was on alert as the fire raged.
The authorities, including Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service, were also on the scene, but fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Loud Explosions and Thick Smoke Cause Alarm
Shocking footage shared on social media captured the terrifying scene, showing massive plumes of smoke rising into the sky, visible even from Manchester city center, over 10 miles away.
Some locals described hearing explosions that could be heard from miles away, particularly from Altrincham, a couple of miles from the site.
One witness even shared that the explosions sounded so intense, they initially feared an attack on Britain.
“I thought Russia was bombing us,” said one local, still shaken by the morning’s events.
Fire Under Control, Evacuations Lifted
By 10:45 a.m., the fire was largely under control, with just a small section still requiring attention from the firefighters.
Local roads, including Floats Road and other nearby routes, had been shut down, but by around 12:40 p.m., the fire was almost entirely extinguished, and all road closures were lifted.
Residents who had been evacuated due to the smoke were allowed to return to their homes.
The fire brigade continued to urge nearby residents to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution until the situation was fully under control.
A Morning of Fear and Confusion
The fire’s severity caused quite a bit of panic among locals, with some initially fearing that something more catastrophic was happening.
One person even mistook the explosions for gunshots near Manchester Airport, about three miles away, before realizing it was the fire.
As of midday, the hard work of emergency services had paid off, and the area was starting to return to normal.
The fire, which had disrupted not only the local community but also raised alarm in the wider region, was under control, and life was slowly getting back on track.
Thanks to the efforts of the firefighters, the situation was no longer a threat to the public’s safety.
