The End of a Marriage: What Happened Between Martin Clunes and Lucy Aston?
Martin Clunes’ first wife, Lucy Aston, has shared the comment she believes led to the end of their marriage.
The couple, who tied the knot in 1990, faced difficulties just a few years later, resulting in their separation in 1997.
The Tension in Their Relationship
Lucy opens up about the growing distance between them, which seemed to come to a head when Martin’s acting career began to soar while she remained working in a food shop.
The issues started to show when Martin reportedly ‘forgot’ to invite her to a party.
That misstep led to a heated argument that would later become the breaking point of their marriage.
The Moment That Changed Everything
During their argument at a Chinese restaurant, Lucy recalls Martin telling her, “You are an embarrassment.
” In an interview with The Mirror, Lucy explained how that moment was the final straw.
She was called “boring” for choosing to focus on her studies to become a crisis counselor, something she thought would help others.
After the harsh words were spoken, Lucy stood up, told Martin “thanks for dinner,” and stormed out.
Later, Lucy went back to the restaurant, where she found Martin sitting alone, surrounded by their leftover meal.
She took off her gold wedding ring, slammed it on the table, and left for good.
The Anger and Betrayal
One of the things that particularly upset Lucy was Martin attending a party without her, something he hadn’t mentioned beforehand.
He told her it was just a small gathering with a few actor friends.
That revelation, along with the insults exchanged, led Lucy to conclude that their marriage was over.
Moving On: Life After Divorce
The couple officially divorced in 1997, and Martin married Philippa Braithwaite later that same year.
The two have been together ever since.
They have a daughter, Emily, born in 1999, who now works as a manager at Cheddington Equestrian Therapy and Rehabilitation Centre.
Martin has said that he and Lucy are now “friends,” but he has also referred to their marriage as “rotten.
” Reflecting on his past, he admitted that when he met Philippa, he was still coming out of a difficult relationship and wasn’t initially open to starting a new one.
Martin’s Latest Roles
Currently, Martin is making waves in the acting world once again.
His latest project is the 2025 ITV drama Out There, and he’s also preparing to star in Neil & Martin’s Bon Voyage, a travelogue miniseries alongside his Men Behaving Badly co-star Neil Morrissey.
Though his personal life had its challenges, Martin’s career continues to thrive.
