Brazilian Man Dies Falling Down a 130-Foot Hole He Dug Under His Kitchen Chasing Dreamt Gold, Ignoring Warnings and Neighbors’ Concerns

Fatal Pursuit of Gold

A tragic incident unfolded as 71-year-old Joao Pimenta da Silva from Brazil died after falling down a 130-foot hole he dug beneath his kitchen floor.

The man had been engrossed in a belief that gold was buried beneath his property in Ipatinga, Minas Gerais, driven by a vivid dream about a fortune.

Obsession Turns Fatal

Neighbors revealed Joao’s obsession, noting his year-long excavation efforts in search of the dreamed gold.

His commitment led him to hire individuals for the digging work, with costs increasing as the hole deepened. Reports suggest Joao encountered obstacles like a large stone and even contemplated using dynamite to clear it.

Warnings Ignored

Despite neighbors’ warnings about the dangers and skepticism about his mission, Joao persisted.

He believed a “spirit” in a dream had directed him to the gold beneath a rock below his kitchen floor, ignoring concerns raised by those attempting to dissuade him.

Tragic Incident and Rescue Efforts

On January 5, tragedy struck when Joao fell from a wooden platform near the top of the 130-foot hole while attempting to exit following water and mud removal.

Firefighters’ attempts to save him were futile. His body, with severe injuries including head trauma and multiple fractures, was retrieved by emergency services.

Fatal Outcome

Despite efforts by a friend present during the incident, Joao succumbed to his injuries, ultimately losing his life due to the fall.

The hole, approximately 35 inches in diameter and spanning about 12 floors deep, serves as a stark reminder of the fatal consequences of this ill-fated quest for gold.
