The incident occurred when he allegedly poured petrol on his wife and set her on fire during a drunken argument at their home in A-Section Botshabelo.
Drunken Argument Turns Violent:
Dikgang Edward Lebetsa and his 36-year-old wife were drinking at home when a dispute arose over missing money.
According to Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), the argument escalated, resulting in the suspect assaulting his wife, causing her to fall to the ground.
Petrol Attack:
In a horrifying turn of events, the accused returned holding a container filled with petrol and proceeded to douse his wife with it.
The incident took place at approximately 21:00.
Fortunately, the victim managed to extinguish the flames by using a nearby water bucket.
However, her husband locked her inside the house, preventing her from seeking immediate medical attention.
Escape and Hospitalization:
The following morning, the victim managed to escape and sought treatment at a local hospital.
She reported the incident to the Botshabelo SAPS, leading to the arrest of her husband.
On Tuesday, he was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on 25 May.
