Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was notably absent from his team’s midweek clash against Marumo Gallants due to an injury.
This marks another setback in what has been a year filled with more injuries than Williams has typically faced throughout his career.
Despite his absence, Sundowns managed to secure a 3-1 victory over Gallants at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium, with Denis Onyango stepping in to cover for the Bafana Bafana captain.
However, with Sundowns juggling participation in three different competitions, the need for Williams to return to the field as soon as possible is pressing.
Fortunately, it appears his injury isn’t too serious, and he is expected to return to action in just a few days.
Coach Miguel Cardoso Speaks Out on Williams’ Injury and Onyango’s Performance
After the match, Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso addressed the situation, noting that the red card handed to Denis Onyango in the game added complexity going into their next match.
He acknowledged the impact of suspensions and injuries on the team’s preparation.
“It’s always challenging when a player gets a red card because you never know what could happen in the following game,” Cardoso shared, as reported by FARPost.
“Ronwen [Williams] is our first-choice goalkeeper, but Denis [Onyango] has been performing well, and tonight, he made an incredible save from a header that could have been dangerous.”
Cardoso expressed confidence that Williams’ injury was minor, saying, “I believe Ronwen will recover soon from this small issue and will be back in goal for us.
But if not, we have other capable keepers like Jody [February], Sanele [Tshabalala], and Reyaad Pieterse to step in.”
Williams’ Fitness and the Upcoming Fixtures
The question on many fans’ minds is whether Ronwen Williams will be fit enough to participate in Sundowns’ next game against TS Galaxy.
While his immediate future is uncertain, the good news is that he should be ready in time for the important clash against Kaizer Chiefs in two weeks.
