It’s hard to imagine a Mamelodi Sundowns lineup without the calm, creative presence of Themba Zwane.
For over a decade, he’s been one of the most reliable and iconic figures at the club.
But as the 2024/2025 season nears its end, there’s growing speculation that his journey with the Brazilians might be approaching its final chapter.
A Legacy Built in Yellow and Blue
Zwane’s career at Sundowns has been nothing short of legendary.
Since returning from a loan stint with Mpumalanga Black Aces back in 2014, he’s gone on to help the club lift eight Premier Soccer League trophies and has even brought home a coveted CAF Champions League title.
Not to mention his 47 caps for Bafana Bafana.
But fast forward to today, and despite all that silverware and star quality, Zwane finds himself in an uncertain spot.
Contract Talks on Ice… for Now
The 35-year-old attacking midfielder signed a short one-year extension in August 2024—but that deal is now set to expire in just a couple of months, come June.
And here’s the catch: Sundowns haven’t offered a new contract yet.
According to a report from FARPost, the club is holding off on negotiations while they monitor Zwane’s recovery.
He’s been sidelined since the season began due to an Achilles tendon injury, and it appears the technical team wants to see how he heals before making any commitments.
Can “Mshishi” Make a Comeback?
Fans know Zwane is a fighter. Nicknamed “Mshishi,” he’s shown time and time again that he thrives under pressure.
But at 35 and coming off a serious injury, there’s no denying the challenge ahead.
The big question remains—can he bounce back strong enough to earn another season with the champions?
If you’re a Sundowns supporter or just a fan of South African football, you’ve probably got some thoughts on this.
Does Zwane still have more to give, or is this the right time for the club to look to the next generation?
