Dramatic Shootout Leads to Arrests

On Thursday, 11 May 2023, male and female suspects were apprehended by a multi-disciplinary team of law enforcement agencies for their alleged involvement in the murders of illegal miners in Selby, Johannesburg.


Xolani Fihla, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), confirmed that the arrests were made by an integrated team comprising the JMPD IIOC Undercover Reaction Unit and the South African Police Service (SAPS) Ekurhuleni District Trio Task Team.

The suspects were taken into custody for the possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The operational team had received information about a wanted suspect linked to the killings of illegal miners, also known as “Zama Zamas,” in Crystal Park, Benoni.

Acting on this information, they proceeded to the suspect’s residence located in the Phola Informal Settlement in Selby.

However, upon their arrival, the officers were met with a hail of gunfire.

In response, they returned fire in self-defense.


Despite the intense exchange of gunfire, the law enforcement officers successfully apprehended a male and a female suspect.

Incriminating Discoveries Made During Arrest

During the arrest, the female suspect was found in possession of a black bag.

A search of the bag revealed a Norinco 45 ACP pistol with its serial number filed off, along with one magazine containing 6 rounds, a hand grenade, and 15 shotgun rounds.

The male suspect, on the other hand, was found with a 9mm pistol, twenty-two 9mm rounds, two R5 rounds, and two 223 Remington rifle ammunitions.

Further investigation revealed that the firearm possessed by the male suspect was linked to an ongoing case at Ikageng SAPS.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

Following their arrest, the male and female suspects were detained at the Johannesburg Central SAPS.
