Lucas Radebe on what this generation of Bafana Bafana lacks

Bafana Bafana are on another rebuilding phase under Hugo Broos who was appointed as head coach in May 2021 but they are yet to really find their feet.

The only significant progress made was during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers where Bafana Bafana fell short of qualifying for the playoffs.

Despite being in pole position to top their group, Bafana Bafana surrendered that spot with a 1-0 loss to Ghana in their final group match.

And their failure to qualify left a bitter taste in the mouths of many South African football fans who were hopeful of Bafana Bafana making it to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The latest defeat to France has had fans criticising Broos whom some said he doesn’t know what he’s doing and felt he was tactically exposed on the night.

However, Radebe appears to be having a different view as he blamed the characteristics of players Bafana Bafana currently have instead of the coach.

Radebe feels Bafana Bafana lack team work and team spirit while he also lamented the country’s lack of sending players overseas in comparison to when the team won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“We are still struggling to house the same team in one room to grow together like the Class of 1996.

“In our squad back then, we had almost 80 percent of our players based overseas.”

“With these players now, we lack a lot… team work and team spirit,” added Radebe.
