In a decisive move to curb illegal trade activities, Limpopo police, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, conducted a series of operations resulting in the apprehension of multiple suspects engaged in the possession and distribution of illicit cigarettes and drugs.

The well-coordinated operations unfolded on Thursday, 15 February, specifically targeting suspects in the Waterberg District through meticulously planned and executed raids.

Mookgophong Operation: Intercepting Illegal Cigarette Transport

In Mookgophong, Naboomspruit Police, in collaboration with the private security sector, responded to a tip-off about a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal cigarettes.

Acting swiftly, officers intercepted the vehicle at a filling station, leading to the arrest of two suspects aged 23 and 28.

The suspects were found in possession of substantial quantities of illicit cigarettes, suggesting an intent to distribute within local communities.

The seized goods, valued at approximately R299 000, are currently undergoing further examination.

Bela-Bela Drug Bust: Apprehension of Four Male Suspects

Simultaneously, in Bela-Bela, police apprehended four male suspects involved in distinct incidents of drug dealing.

In one incident, three suspects were caught in possession of 34 sachets of Nyaope drugs, while another suspect was found with 260 sachets of Nyaope and undisclosed cash.

Police Commissioner's Praise for Crackdown

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the arrests, emphasizing that "These arrests send a clear message that the illegal cigarette and drug trade will not be tolerated.

"The concerted efforts of law enforcement agencies underscore their commitment to combatting illicit trade and ensuring the safety of communities in the region.

Legal Action and Court Proceedings: Charges Await Apprehended Suspects

The suspects apprehended during these operations are slated to face charges in the respective Magistrate’s Court, marking a significant step in holding individuals accountable for their involvement in illicit trade.
