Limpopo Clubs Unite to Support Wimbledon Champion Kgothatso Montjane’s Tennis Dream

In a remarkable gesture of support, three Limpopo DStv Premiership clubs—Sekhukhune United, Polokwane City FC, and Magesi FC—have come together to financially support Wimbledon champion Kgothatso Montjane.

This initiative aims to help Montjane fulfill her dream of building a new tennis court in the province, which will also cater to the needs of disabled players.

Kgothatso Montjane recently made history by becoming the first black South African woman to win at Wimbledon, triumphing in the wheelchair women’s doubles category.

In recognition of her achievement, a special event was held in her honor, attended by various dignitaries, including Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Funani Maseko, Capricorn District Municipality Mayor Mamedupi, and Polokwane Municipality Mayor John Mpe.

Financial Pledges from Clubs

At the event, Polokwane City FC led the way with club boss Johnny Mogaladi pledging R1,000,000.

Sekhukhune United followed with a commitment of R600,000, and Magesi FC’s General Manager, Peter Makgamatha, pledged R100,000.

These contributions bring the total amount raised to R330,000, marking a significant step towards realizing Montjane’s vision of a state-of-the-art tennis facility in Limpopo.

The Motivation Behind the Support

The decision to support Montjane wasn’t just about recognizing her achievements but also about addressing the infrastructure challenges faced by athletes in the region.

“Dealing with people in sports, we understand the challenges,” said Makgamatha of Magesi FC.

“She [Montjane] really found it difficult to reach her level without proper infrastructure.

These facilities are crucial for nurturing young talent, and we’re glad to assist.”

Sekhukhune United’s Marketing Manager, Tebogo Mapinga, echoed this sentiment, explaining that the club’s support was driven by a desire to give back to the community.

“Having come from these parts of the world, we know the importance of good facilities,” Mapinga stated.

“The call came from the Montjane Foundation to help future stars, and that’s exactly what we’re in the business of doing.”

This united effort from the clubs highlights the importance of community support in sports development.

By coming together, they are not only celebrating Montjane’s success but also investing in the future of tennis in Limpopo, ensuring that more athletes can follow in her footsteps.
