Lily Allen has been opening up about the emotional journey she’s been on recently, sharing some personal insights that reflect both pain and healing.
The singer, 39, recently checked herself into an £8,000-a-week trauma center after struggling with emotional turmoil, following her split from her estranged husband, actor David Harbour.
She admitted that this difficult time in her life led her to reflect deeply and inspired a new approach to dealing with pain and personal struggles.
A Tattoo Inspired by Personal Pain and Growth
During her time at the trauma center, Lily spent time reading a book about self-compassion, which deeply resonated with her.
Speaking on the latest episode of her Miss Me? podcast, she shared a powerful phrase that stood out: “Suffering x pain = resistance.”
This phrase, she revealed, made such an impact on her that she’s now considering getting it as a tattoo.
Lily spoke candidly about how the message changed her perspective on handling pain.
“You have to sit with the pain, confront it, and accept it,” she explained.
“Love the pain, caress the pain… it’s okay for things to be painful.”
She emphasized that resisting pain only increases suffering, making it clear that accepting hardship is a crucial part of healing.
Strained Relationship and Emotional Toll
The singer’s decision to check into the trauma center came after her breakup with David Harbour in December.
She reportedly found out about his use of the celebrity dating app Raya, which ultimately led to the couple’s separation.
Sources close to Lily say that she has been deeply affected by the split, especially after learning about David’s new relationship with 27-year-old aspiring actress and model, Ellie Fallon.
The couple had been together for some time, but David’s relationship with Ellie came to light when they were seen together during a trip to India.
Lily, who is aware of the romance, is said to be particularly upset after seeing a photo of Ellie smoking one of David’s favorite cigars, which was posted on Instagram months before the breakup.
Personal Struggles with Medication and Mental Health
In addition to the emotional challenges stemming from her relationship, Lily also opened up about her struggles with mental health.
She shared that after being prescribed antidepressants by a US doctor, her mental state worsened.
“The medication that I was on last year sent me f***ing crazy,” she admitted.
“So I’ve had to change it.” Lily explained how difficult it was to manage her emotions and take care of her family while dealing with the negative effects of the medication.
Before her trip to the US, a friend had warned her about being cautious with prescriptions there, but Lily felt that the antidepressant she was prescribed didn’t help her at all.
Thankfully, after changing her medication, she feels like she’s in a better place, though still not perfect.
Prioritizing Family and Self-Care
Despite everything, Lily has also shared that her children, Ethel and Marnie, are always her priority.
She made the difficult decision to check into the trauma center to focus on her own healing, admitting that it was becoming harder to be there for her kids.
“I don’t want them to ever feel like they have to prop me up,” she said, referring to her emotional struggles.
“None of this is their fault, and it’s my job to support them and make them feel safe.”
Lily explained that this time away from her children, while painful, was ultimately for their benefit.
She believes that in order to be the best mother she can be, she needed to focus on herself first.
“I’m definitely in a stronger place now,” she added, though acknowledging that she’s still working on improving herself every day.
Lily’s journey shows the importance of taking care of one’s mental health and confronting pain head-on, even when it’s difficult.
Her openness about her struggles, both in her personal life and mental health, is a reminder of how complex healing can be, but also how transformative it can be when we face our challenges and allow ourselves to grow from them.
