Recently, the Limpopo community and fans of the iconic Skeem Saam actress Lydia Mokgokoloshi came together to celebrate a special milestone—her 85th birthday.
This joyous occasion not only marked her birthday but also aligned with Heritage Day and World Elderly Day, making it even more significant.
Limpopo Premier’s Tribute
Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, the Premier of Limpopo, took the time to honor Mokgokoloshi during a visit on September 24.
He expressed the province’s pride in her achievements and longevity, saying, “We are proud of you. To reach this age is a rarity, and it teaches us so much. Living past 70 is increasingly challenging these days.”
The Premier also emphasized the importance of showing love and respect to the elderly while they are still with us, encouraging the youth to cherish their elders.
In a heartfelt gesture, Dr. Ramathuba made a second visit to Mokgokoloshi’s home in Botlokwa Village on September 27, further celebrating her remarkable life.
A Fond Farewell to Acting
Mokgokoloshi, who is widely recognized for her role as Koko Mantsha on Skeem Saam, stepped back from full-time acting in 2020.
After portraying the character since the show’s launch in 2011, she made the decision to take a break.
Despite her reduced presence, the show’s producers confirmed that she would continue to appear occasionally, understanding the need for her to have rest and care at this stage in her life.
The spokesperson for the soap opera, Sumanya Mogola, noted, “She will still be involved in the story but won’t be shooting as frequently.
Our filming schedule can be quite demanding, and we want to ensure she has the comfort and rest she deserves.”
Fans Unite in Celebration
Fans of Mokgokoloshi also took to social media to express their love and admiration for her on this special day.
Messages flooded in, wishing her good health and strength, with one user writing, “Happy Birthday granny Koko. Wishing you good health. May God Almighty strengthen you always.”
Another fan reminisced, “I will always remember her as MmaNkweshêng and her famous ‘Ma ntsatsarapa têna’ followed by go tsimola’. What a legend.”
A notable tweet from Dr. Ramathuba shared a photo of the celebration, stating, “Join me as I wish Koko Lydia Mokgokoloshi a happy and blessed 85th birthday.
A commitment is a commitment. We had to deliver her cake before going to work as committed three days ago.”
A Legacy of Cultural Impact
The Premier’s visits also highlighted Mokgokoloshi’s significant contributions to the arts and her role in promoting the Sepedi language.
As both a talented actress and a cultural icon, her influence extends far beyond the screen, reminding everyone of the importance of heritage and respect for elders in society.
