Deputy Governor, Dr.

Obafemi Hamzat, disclosed this in a statement yesterday.

The deputy governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr.

Tunji Bello, revealed this during the public neutralisation of drugs in Ikeja.

He said, “The collaboration between LASEPA and NAFDAC is a good initiative towards decongesting the environment of hazardous products.

“This synergy will go a long way in reducing the rate of consumption of codeine among the youth as the consumption of codeine-containing syrup is on the increase in Nigeria.

The General Manager of LASEPA, Dr.

Dolapo Fasawe, urged manufacturing companies to use treatment plants to discharge hazardous chemicals.

“Manufacturing companies have been charged to get a functional effluent treatment plant for proper discharge of their hazardous chemicals because the monitoring and enforcement officials from the agency will continue to monitor the process and method of waste disposals by these companies,” she said.

The Director-General, NAFDAC, Prof.

Mojisola Adeyeye, said, “NAFDAC found the LASEPA effluent treatment plant suitable for the proper destruction of these hazardous products and this decision was made to ensure the products are safely destroyed without constituting hazards to the environment.
