Lara Trump, the president-elect’s daughter-in-law, made waves when she decided to remove herself from consideration for Florida’s soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat.
Despite being Donald Trump’s top choice, Lara explained that the timing simply wasn’t right for her.
“The only person Donald Trump wanted to see there was probably me,” Lara shared in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com.
She admitted that her decision to step back left her father-in-law disappointed.
“He was a little upset when I said, ‘I’m not gonna do it right now.’”
The seat will soon be vacated by Senator Marco Rubio, who is preparing to step into his new role as Secretary of State.
Donald Trump’s Top Pick
President-elect Donald Trump made no secret of his preference for Lara to take over Rubio’s Senate seat.
In December, he even took to social media, posting a poll on X (formerly Twitter) asking, “Would you support Lara Trump to replace Marco Rubio in the Florida Senate?” An overwhelming 75.8% of respondents said yes.
Still, Lara surprised MAGA supporters when she announced she would not pursue the position, teasing instead a “big announcement” in January.
New Ventures on the Horizon
While her future in politics remains uncertain, Lara has been keeping busy with other endeavors.
In November, she launched a fitness apparel line, and she’s set to release new music later this year.
“I’ll be making my announcement about my career after the inauguration,” she teased.
“You’ll be seeing more of me, not less of me. For some people, that’s great; some people might not like that.”
Ron DeSantis Holds the Key
The decision of who will replace Rubio lies in the hands of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Lara expressed confidence in his ability to choose the right person for the role.
“I think he has great instincts and will probably make the right choice,” she said.
Lara also praised the governor’s leadership, calling him a key reason she and her husband, Eric Trump, relocated to Florida.
Matt Gaetz: A Possible Contender?
Among the names floated for the Senate seat is former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz. Gaetz recently stepped down from the House after being tapped by Donald Trump for Attorney General.
However, amid a smear campaign and allegations of misconduct, Gaetz withdrew from consideration and transitioned to a new role as a host on One America News Network.
Lara had high praise for Gaetz, calling him “a true America First patriot” and an ally of her father-in-law.
“If it’s him, I think that would be great. I’d be very happy to see that.”

As Lara Trump steps back from politics for now, she hinted at exciting developments ahead.
Whether her “big announcement” will steer her back into the political arena or focus on her business ventures remains to be seen.
