In a deeply troubling case, a woman named Sharon Goldie faced scrutiny during a recent inquiry into the tragic circumstances surrounding her daughter.
On the day her 13-year-old daughter Robyn was allegedly attacked by a 14-year-old boy near Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Goldie was reportedly at a pub, leaving Robyn at home watching TV’s Tipping Point.
The inquiry revealed that Goldie was initially reluctant to report the assault, fearing it would lead to invasive medical examinations for her daughter.
Failure to Report
According to the inquiry at Hamilton Sheriff Court, Goldie was advised to disclose the full details of the alleged attack but did not comply.
Social worker Brian McNott, who testified, expressed his concerns about Goldie’s response.
He found her reaction to the rape allegation troubling, noting that she discouraged Robyn from seeking police involvement.
McNott highlighted that Goldie’s incomplete disclosure to the doctor raised significant concerns about her ability to ensure Robyn’s safety and obtain necessary medical intervention.
Troubled Home Life
McNott also pointed out the complex dynamics between Goldie and Robyn.
After spending eight years with her grandmother, Robyn faced numerous challenges adjusting back home.
McNott described their relationship as more akin to that of siblings rather than a traditional mother-daughter bond.
The social worker noted various police concerns about their living situation and how the mishandling of the rape allegation marked a significant turning point in the case.
Health and Handling of Allegation
Family support worker Victoria Logan testified that she had advised Goldie to have Robyn examined following the rape allegation.
Despite initial reluctance, Goldie eventually took Robyn for a medical check-up after persistent encouragement.
Logan emphasized the seriousness of the situation, as Robyn had been passing blood, indicating a potentially grave issue.
Disturbing Comments and Consequences
The court also heard unsettling comments from Goldie regarding Robyn’s behavior after the alleged assault.
Goldie claimed Robyn was “boasting” about losing her virginity, which she initially perceived as trivial rather than a serious complaint.
Goldie’s own reaction was reportedly one of anger and frustration, as she feared the long-term implications of the case involving doctors, the court, and media scrutiny.
Legal Outcome
The inquiry also covered the tragic outcome of Robyn’s health.
On the day she died in July 2018, Robyn had been left alone at home while Goldie went out.
She later developed peritonitis and suffered a perforated duodenal ulcer.
In October 2020, Goldie was convicted of wilful ill-treatment and neglect, receiving a prison sentence of three years and six months.
The inquiry, led by Sheriff Linda Nicolson, is ongoing as more details emerge.
