LAGOS COUNSELS TEACHERS, STUDENTS TO SHUN ‘QUICK MONEY’ SYNDROME

Lagos State Education District I has advised teachers and students to shun the now common urge for quick money through unscrupulous means and embrace the way of Allah.

The charge was given on Thursday by the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of the District, Mrs.  Titilayo Solarin, during the District’s Annual Ramadan Lecture held at Government Senior College, Agege, on the heels of increasing desire for quick wealth among youngsters and teenagers, which has resulted in many cases of ritual-related killings and other vices. Speaking on the theme: “Youth Impatience For Wealth: Islamic Solution”, Mrs. Solarin said that the choice of the theme was informed by the fact that the youths of today have demonstrated strong desire to get wealth at all cost; even as teenagers, without considering the aftermath of their actions.

Her words: “I want to believe that we are having all these occurrences among us today because we weren’t leading these younger ones in the way of Allah. This ungodly desire has led many to engage in armed robbery, ritual killing, yahoo-yahoo, banditry, kidnapping among several other ungodly vices. Instilling the fear of Allah in the youths can help deter them from engaging in any of the vices and can also change the minds of those already engaging in them.

This explains why we are having this lecture for our principals, teachers and students with the hope that they would all imbibe the teachings from the Holy Quran”. Solarin advised parents to wake up to their duties and not delegate their roles to teachers, saying that teachers are there to complement the efforts of parents.

“If we all wake up to our roles, our societies would be a better place to live”, she stated.  The Guest Lecturer, who is a Director of Education in the District and Principal of Lagos Baptist Senior College, Orile Agege, Mr. Oladoyin Tajudeen Adetunji, described the topic as relevant and timely considering the alarming rate of sudden love for quick wealth among young persons.

He remarked that today’s parents are losing focus on the essence of parenting, forgetting how they were trained during their own days when emphasis was on dignity of labour and hard work.

“The rate of sudden death is becoming increasingly high because people are not patient; everyone must come back to Allah in order to live a fulfilling life as promised by the creator of all humans”, he advised.

One of the participating students, Tajudeen Olamide Onifade of Ifako Ijaiye Secondary School, appreciated the District for the exposure given to them through the lecture, saying that the gesture shows that the leadership of the District cares about their future beyond their academics. According to him: “I learnt that we should not be too hasty to get rich and we must not be unduly influenced or oppressed when people get money quickly from unclean means because there is an appointed time for everything and for everyone.

If we do the right things the right ways, we will definitely become successful”. The yearly event was instituted to educate students, teachers and principals about the moral and ethical significance of Ramadan and the need to be more tolerant in their dealings.

As part of the lecture, schools from different Zones in the District participated in the Quiz Competition, with Ipaja Junior College emerging winner in the Junior category of the competition followed by Eko Junior College, Agege and Station Junior Grammar School, Fagba in the second and third positions respectively.

In the Senior School category, Lagos Baptist School College, Agege (LABASCO), came first, followed by Meiran Community School and Ijaiye Housing Estate as second and third place winners. Also, Station Junior Grammar School, Fagba, Keke Senior High School, Ifako-Ijaiye and Idimu Junior High School, ldimu came first, second and third in the Quranic Recitation competition.
