A KwaZulu-Natal shopper found a rodent, reportedly a rat, inside a loaf of Sasko bread she had bought.

The drama unfolded when Nombulelo Mkumla shared a video of the incident on social media, sparking widespread attention.

According to a report from The South African website, Mkumla’s post quickly went viral, putting Sasko under intense scrutiny.

Public Outrage and Response

Sasko, part of the Pioneer Foods group, faced significant backlash following the viral video.

Mkumla initially returned the bread to the store and received a full refund.

She was advised to lodge a formal complaint with the supplier.

When she contacted the supplier, she was told that consuming the bread with the rat would not pose a health risk.

Mkumla described the entire ordeal as “traumatic and unpleasant.”

Ongoing Investigation

The exact circumstances of how the rat ended up in the loaf of Sasko Low GI Seeded Whole Wheat bread remain unclear.

Sasko has since initiated an investigation, enlisting third-party service providers to probe the matter thoroughly.

Sasko’s Apology and Actions

In a statement to Eyewitness News, Sasko expressed their shock and regret over the incident.

They confirmed that bread manufacturing at the affected factory would be paused until the investigation concludes.

“We were shocked and devastated when a KZN consumer informed us about finding a rodent in her loaf of Sasko bread,” the statement read.

Sasko extended their apologies to Mkumla and their other customers for any distress caused by this isolated but regrettable situation.
