Fish farmers in the Egbejil area of Kwara State have fled their farms for fear of kidnappers, who recently invaded the community.

The farmers took to their heels after a top fish farmer, who is also a retired customs officer, was abducted from his farm in the area last week.

Speaking on the issue, the state chairman of the Fish Farmers Association of Nigeria (FFAN), Sulyman Buhari, who confirmed the incident, urged the government to intervene before the issue get out of hand.

According to him, many of the farmers had abandoned their facilities due to increasing abductions by gunmen in the Egbejila farming community.

“The government should consider legalising the bearing of arms by fish farmers for self-defence,” he added.

On his part, a farmer in Egbejila, Mr Abdulrahman, said the latest incident had put many of the farmers in great fear over security concerns.

“The retired customs boss is one of the biggest farmers in the community whose farm is one of the most secured.

To us now, if he could be kidnapped, then it means we are no longer safe.

“For now, going to the farm has become one of the most difficult things, for fear of being abducted,” Abdulrahman said.
