Kaya 959 Top 30 kickstarts Youth Month featuring the Ndlovu Youth Choir

The Ndlovu Youth Choir is featured on the Ultimate Kaya 959 Top 30 to kick off Youth Month. Sandile Majola and Thuli Ndlovu, two members of the choir, join DJ Keyez to talk about the group’s latest album, Grateful.

Sandile has been a member of the choir since its founding in 2009, when she was just 13 years old. What began as an after-school youth program in ekasi quickly grew to become one of the most popular groups in the country and the world.

The choir was founded in Moutse Valley, in rural Limpopo, and went on to compete in the America’s Got Talent reality show as a finalist.

Ralf Schmitt, the choir’s director, is so enthusiastic about the ensemble that he forged a connection with Berklee College of Music in Boston, where four choir members will study music.

Two of the choristers involved in this project are Thuli and Sandile.

When Sandile joined the group in 2009, it “wasn’t a serious thing.”

“At the time it was just something I did for fun, to keep me off the streets after school. It only became a professional thing in 2018 when we were scouted for America’s Got Talent.”

It was after their viral collaboration with SA’s Grammy award winning flautist, Walter Kellerman that doors flew open for the choir.

‘Grateful’ to be going on tour

The reception to Ndlovu Youth Choir’s new CD Grateful has been phenomenal, to the point where they are planning a nationwide tour in the coming months.

Grateful Dead’s sound is distinct from what the band is known for, and the single Afrika Hey, starring Sun-El Musician and DJ Kenza, is now doing the best.

The group now has 40 members, and they’ve progressed from just performing to making their own music, pushing them out of their comfort zones.

The album is a chance for the choir to express their gratitude to everyone who has supported them over the years.

“We are #Grateful for each and every opportunity that comes out way. We feel there are so many young people around the world, waiting for their chance to show what they can do. We are extremely fortunate to get the opportunity to showcase our talents on one of the world’s biggest stages. In a way, we are humbled to represent the potential and untapped talents of millions of young people around the world and hope to use every opportunity that comes out way to showcase that.”
