…By Lola Smith for TDPel Media. Kate and Gerry McCann, the parents of Madeleine McCann, released a statement on the ‘Official Find Madeleine Campaign’ Facebook page marking the 16th anniversary of her disappearance.
The couple stated that Madeleine is “still very much missed” and that they are desperately “awaiting a breakthrough”.
They also thanked everyone for their support, which they said “really helps”.
Madeleine was three years old when she vanished during a family holiday to Praia da Luz in Portugal in 2003. Her parents still hold out hope that she will be found safe and well.
The couple posted a poem by Clare Polland in the same upload, titled ‘The Contradiction’, which they said “resonates strongly with us”.
The couple are expected to host a prayer gathering in their home village of Rothley, Leicestershire, on the same day to remember their missing daughter.
The great uncle of Madeleine, Brian Kennedy, said that Kate and Gerry always feel heartened by the attendance of well-wishers, and that it is much appreciated that people still want to show such support.
German paedophile Christian Brueckner, who lived close to Praia da Luz when Madeleine disappeared, has been named as the prime suspect.
However, he denies any involvement, and is currently serving a jail term in his home country for raping a pensioner in Praia da Luz.
Earlier this year, a Polish woman named Julia Wendall claimed that she could be Madeleine McCann, but DNA results proved she is not the missing Brit.
It is heart-wrenching to read about the McCann’s ongoing struggle to find their daughter, and their statement highlights the pain and grief they continue to experience 16 years later.
The fact that they are still waiting for a breakthrough after all this time demonstrates their unwavering dedication to finding their daughter, and their faith that she could still be out there somewhere.
It is also touching to see the outpouring of support from well-wishers who continue to stand with the McCann family during this difficult time.
It is a reminder that even amidst tragedy, hope and compassion still exist.
