After Peter Dutton’s humiliating slip-up in parliament on Thursday, Karl Stefanovic insulted him and called him a “disgrace.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese criticized the Liberal Party leader in parliament and accused him of not knowing his own state of Queensland well enough after he confused the seaside town of Yeppoon with the Yeppen Floodplain.
Friday, in response to the error, Stefanovic warned Mr. Dutton, “Queenslander! I mean, you are an embarrassment this morning!
Mr. Dutton laughed off his mistake and stated, “I have lived in Bundy and Townsville.” My relatives live in Mackay, Townsville, and Rocky… And I’ve traveled this path countless times.
In fact, I was there only the week before last. We drove in. I must have been sleeping when we entered the room because – yep. I got it wrong. I am aware of where Yeppoon is located. I have visited the coast numerous times.
Mr. Dutton’s blunder occurred while Mr. Albanese was being accused of intimidating Michelle Landry, the Nationals member for Capricornia in central Queensland.
Thursday during Question Time, Ms. Landry accused the prime minister of violating a commitment.
She stated that the federal budget issued by the Labor government on Tuesday postponed by at least two years $800 million in Commonwealth financing for the construction of the Rockhampton Ring Road.
Mr. Albanese mentioned funding the Bruce Highway across the Yeppen Floodplain, south of Rockhampton, in his statement.
This prompted Mr. Dutton, also from Queensland, to comment on the town of Yeppoon, located more than 50 kilometers away on the coast.
The PM used the opposition leader’s geography inaccuracy as a source of ridicule.
‘Yeppoon is a unique location! Yeppoon is located on the coast to the north of Rockhampton, whilst Rockhampton is located to the south,’ he screamed.
“The Yeppen Floodplain is to the south, and the Bruce Highway enters Rockhampton from the south!”
Mr. Albanese received a thunderous ovation from the Labor Party benches and twice shook his fist at Mr. Dutton while chanting “Queenslander!”
“That’s it!” he added dismissively.
The prime minister then described the history of the road project and criticized the opposition for failing to complete it while in office.
“We will complete this project just like we completed the Yeppen Floodplain and the roads leading to Yeppoon,” he added.
The raucous Labor benches applauded, clapped, and banged their tables in response to the Prime Minister’s wild performance.
Sussan Ley, the deputy leader of the Liberal Party, objected to Mr. Dutton’s behavior, even though it appeared to be directed at him.
She stated, “The member for Capricornia exited the chamber in tears and a condition of extreme sorrow.”
She requested that the speaker study the video and consider the appropriateness of his ‘tone’ during his extremely loud response.
Mr. Dick promised to complete the task and get back to her.
Ms. Landry argued that Mr. Albanese was addressing her during the portion of his answer when his voice was raised, despite the fact that it looked that he was addressing Mr. Dutton.
Ms. Landry was also seen on live television smiling and laughing as Mr. Albanese continued to make fun of the opposition leader.
However, following the conclusion of Question Time, Ms. Landry, Ms. Ley, and many other female Coalition MPs convened a press conference in which they accused Mr. Albanese of ‘bullying’ her.
She stated, “I truly do not appreciate being addressed and yelled at by the prime minister as I was today.”
‘I feel that he and the Labor Party have humiliated me.
This is not the first time that the Labor Party and the Prime Minister’s office have circulated smear campaigns about me in Rockhampton.
“I believe this should be a place where we can all work together, and I strive to treat others with respect and in the manner in which I would like to be treated.
“I’d like to thank my female coworkers for joining me today because we’ve all had enough.
They are a group of hypocrites if they claim that everything on the left is so good. Indeed, it is not.
Our female representatives and senators are constantly treated like pure garbage by the left, and we have had enough.
This pertains to women throughout Australia. If I don’t speak out against this bullying in the legislature, my daughters will have no regard for me.’
Ms. Ley then cited a statement by Mr. Albanese from months earlier in which he declared that the legislature must do more to eradicate bullying.
She cited her as saying, “More must be done to improve the culture of Parliament House; culture sits above policy and procedure and must change.”
The House has a cultural issue with sexual harassment and bullying in the workplace.
