The Kano community has been left in shock following the heartbreaking death of a housewife, Aishatu Umar, under circumstances her family is calling medical negligence.
The incident reportedly occurred after a surgical procedure at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano, raising serious questions about hospital practices and patient safety.
Hospital Board Promises Immediate Investigation
The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has responded swiftly, announcing a thorough investigation into the incident.
In a statement shared with PUNCH Online, the board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, said the Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, has ordered an immediate inquiry to uncover the facts surrounding Umar’s death.
“We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones,” Suleiman said.
“The investigation will be conducted transparently, professionally, and impartially, and any confirmed negligence will result in appropriate action.”
Commitment to Patient Safety
The board emphasized that patient safety remains its top priority, pledging to maintain high standards in healthcare delivery across Kano State.
“Our goal is to ensure that incidents like this do not happen again and that every patient receives safe and effective care,” the statement added.
Family Alleges Prolonged Neglect
According to Aishatu Umar’s family, the tragedy could have been prevented.
Mohammed, a relative, recounted on Facebook that Umar, a mother of five, suffered persistent abdominal pain for months after her September 2025 surgery.
Despite repeated hospital visits, she was reportedly only given pain relief medication without thorough investigations.
“It was only two days before her death that proper tests and scans were conducted, revealing a pair of scissors left inside her body during surgery,” Mohammed said.
He added that although corrective surgery was planned, it was too late to save her.
Questions Raised About Professional Conduct
The family has described the incident as gross professional negligence.
Mohammed questioned how such a critical mistake could happen in a hospital, asking, “How can trained doctors forget scissors inside a patient? Is this not pure negligence?”
The investigation by the Kano State Hospitals Management Board will determine accountability and aim to prevent future tragedies, as the community mourns the loss of Aishatu Umar.
