Vilakazi has seen himself fall further and further down the Sundowns pecking order, with Chiefs said to be monitoring his situation.
Vilakazi made his name at Wits
Vilakazi was once the most sought after player in the country while still turning out for the now defunct Bidvest Wits. After a few impressive seasons at “The Students”. There seemed to be a tug-of-war between Sundowns and Chiefs for his signature in 2016. At that, it was thought that ‘Vila’s’ first choice was to push for a move abroad, which did not materialise. In the end, he remained in South Africa, choosing to sign for the Brazilians instead of Amakhosi.
Vilakazi would see that decision vindicated, as the move to Sundowns saw him winning silverware as well as becoming a Bafana Bafana international in the process. The playmaker was in the national team as recently as the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where a Stuart Baxter side made it all the way to quarterfinals. He has unfortunately fallen off that path now, especially as he continues to struggle for game time at Ka Bo Yellow.
Open to leaving Sundowns
Vilakazi might be open to leaving Sundowns at the end of the season, if his struggles for game time continue. Chiefs are known to be long-term admirers of the player.
“At the time he was still at Wits, he was a regular in the Bafana Bafana team but now at Sundowns, he hardly gets call ups because he is not playing, worse now that there is a new coach who is going with a totally different team. It is the same at Sundowns because the coaches are evolving the team and the older players are getting little or no game time, Vila would not mind leaving at the end of the season if the situation does not change,” said the source.
Chiefs next destination?
At 32-years-old Sundowns may be willing to let Vilakazi go, with Chiefs not known to be shy to sign elder players, nor players from Sundowns either. This one could be one to watch.
