Kaizer Chiefs striker Wandile Duba opens up about his challenging journey compared to Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng’s rise to success in South African football

Kaizer Chiefs forward Wandile Duba has reflected on the contrasting paths he and Orlando Pirates’ rising star, Relebohile Mofokeng, have taken in their young football careers.

While both players have shown tremendous talent, their circumstances couldn’t be more different.

Mofokeng’s Meteoric Rise

At just 19 years old, Relebohile Mofokeng has already built an impressive résumé.

Recently making his 50th appearance for Orlando Pirates during the MTN8 final, Mofokeng has enjoyed a swift ascent in the football world.

His impact on the Buccaneers is undeniable, having contributed significantly to their success with two Nedbank Cup and two MTN8 titles under his belt.

Mofokeng’s record includes nine goals and 10 assists in his 50 appearances, with key performances in both finals last season and this year.

His rise has been aided by a stable club environment and consistent coaching, which has allowed him to flourish.

Duba’s Challenges at Chiefs

On the flip side, Wandile Duba’s journey at Kaizer Chiefs has been more challenging. Unlike Mofokeng, Duba has had to navigate a turbulent period at Chiefs, marked by frequent coaching changes and a lack of major silverware.

This instability has undoubtedly slowed his progress, creating a more difficult environment for the young striker to thrive.

Duba openly acknowledges the difference in their circumstances, stating, “The difference between us is that I was playing in a struggling team while he was at a well-structured club with less pressure.

Pirates are doing well, so everything he does looks good. I’ve had to deal with many coaching changes, whereas he’s had stability with one coach.”

Staying Determined Amid Adversity

Despite the challenges, Duba remains focused on his development.

He credits Chiefs’ new coach, Nasreddine Nabi, with helping him improve, noting that the coach has encouraged him to expand his versatility by playing on the wing.

“Coach Nabi has really changed my mentality and is helping me grow as a player,” Duba shared.

“I never thought I could play on the wing, but he saw my speed and intelligence and believed I could do it. I’m happy to play wherever the coach needs me.”

Different Roads, Same Potential

While Mofokeng’s stability at Pirates has led to early success, Duba’s resilience at Chiefs in the face of adversity shows his determination to succeed.

Both players possess immense talent, and though their paths differ, they are undoubtedly two of South Africa’s most exciting prospects to watch in the coming years.
