Kaizer Chiefs latest: Zwane explains the seven-year trophy drought

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Arthur Zwane has addressed why the team has struggled so much over the previous seven years.

Amakhosi failed to break their trophy drought once more this season, finishing well behind winners Mamelodi Sundowns after 30 games.

Chiefs also failed to make an impression in the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, exiting both tournaments in the first round of fixtures.

Asked why Chiefs have not done well since the 2014-15 season when they won a league and Cup double, Zwane’s brutal response was that they have not had good enough players.

Zwane said the perfect example lies in the nature in which they have conceded goals in the last few games, before adding that creating goalscoring chances has also been a real struggle.

The 48-year-old mentor said, in all of that, the Chiefs coaches are the ones who catch the smoke because they look like they don’t prepare the team for matches.

KAIZER CHIEFS HAVEN’T HAD GOOD ENOUGH PLAYERS – ZWANE

“I think it’s there for everyone to see. I can say things that people might see differently, and they would think maybe I know too much or maybe I’m too harsh on players,” Zwane told reporters.

“But the reality is that we know we didn’t have players good enough to play for this club. We had players, yes, that could play for this club but not good enough. We can’t keep on repeating the same mistakes.

“I have asked earlier on, are we improving? Now, it kills the coaches as if coaches are not preparing the players. Look at the goals that we have been conceding, let alone creating goalscoring opportunities,” added Zwane.
