Kaizer Chiefs have received encouraging news ahead of their Betway Premiership meeting with Stellenbosch FC, with captain Brandon Petersen returning to individual training as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

The goalkeeper’s progress offers a timely lift for the Soweto club as they prepare to return to league action following the three-week FIFA international break. Chiefs will host Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium on Tuesday as they seek to strengthen their position in the standings.

However, Petersen’s return to training does not guarantee that he will be available for selection, with the club continuing to monitor the fitness of several important players.

Chiefs Face Pressure to Close the Gap on the Leaders

Chiefs return to competitive action sitting fourth in the league after an unbeaten opening seven matches, during which they recorded three victories and four draws.

Although they have avoided defeat, the number of draws has left Amakhosi playing catch-up with their leading rivals. Mamelodi Sundowns occupy top spot, seven points ahead of Chiefs despite having played one more match.

Second-placed Orlando Pirates hold a six-point advantage over the Soweto side, while AmaZulu are three points clear in third position.

With the leading teams already building separation at the top, Chiefs will be keen to collect maximum points against Stellenbosch rather than allow the gap to widen further.

Stellenbosch Arrive With Their Own League Ambitions

Stellenbosch occupy seventh place after seven matches, having registered two wins, three draws and two defeats. They trail Chiefs by four points heading into Tuesday’s encounter.

Both teams will be looking to build on their final results before the international break. Chiefs played out a goalless draw against Golden Arrows away from home, while Stellenbosch secured a 1-0 victory over Kruger United on the road.

The result at FNB Stadium could therefore influence the early-season direction of both clubs, with Chiefs aiming to remain within reach of the top three and Stellenbosch looking to move closer to the teams above them.

Four Chiefs Players Remain Injury Concerns

Despite Petersen’s progress, Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that four key players remain on their injury list.

In an update published on Sunday, the club said Petersen had resumed individual training while recovering from a knee problem. Midfielder Lebohang Maboe is nursing an ankle injury, while Phili and Siphesihle Ndlovu remain long-term absentees.

The club did not confirm that any of the four players would be available for the Stellenbosch fixture.

Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz will therefore have to assess the available options before finalising his team for the match.

Maboe’s Fitness Could Influence Chiefs’ Midfield

Maboe’s injury is a particular concern for Amakhosi, given his importance to the team during the opening part of the season.

The midfielder has featured in all eight of Chiefs’ matches across competitions this season, according to the club’s update, and his absence could force Da Cruz to consider changes in the middle of the pitch.

Adolf Bitegeko could be in contention for his first Betway Premiership start if Maboe is unavailable, although the final decision will depend on the coach’s assessment of his options.

The extent of Maboe’s recovery will consequently be an important factor as Chiefs prepare for a demanding return to league football.

Goalkeeping Options Available if Petersen Is Not Ready

While Petersen works towards a full return, Chiefs have alternative goalkeepers available in Renaldo Leaner and Bruce Bvuma.

Their presence gives Da Cruz options should the captain require additional time to regain full fitness.

Petersen’s return to individual training is nevertheless a positive development for the club, although the difference between individual work and full team training means his readiness for competitive action remains uncertain.

Phili and Ndlovu Continue Their Recovery

Chiefs are also waiting for progress from Phili and Siphesihle Ndlovu, both of whom have been described as long-term absentees.

Their continued unavailability limits the coach’s selection choices as the team prepares for the Stellenbosch encounter.

The club has indicated that its medical staff will continue monitoring injured players and provide further information as necessary.

Chiefs and Stellenbosch will both enter Tuesday’s match without suspended players, leaving fitness rather than disciplinary issues as the main concern for team selection.

Baartman, Vilakazi and Abrahams Return From U23 Duty

Chiefs have also welcomed back Luke Baartman, Mfundo Vilakazi and Faiz Abrahams after the trio spent time away with South Africa’s Under-23 national team.

Their return provides additional depth for the coaching staff, although Baartman’s fitness remains under observation after he sustained an injury.

The club previously confirmed that its medical team was monitoring the forward and would share updates on his progress alongside information about other sidelined players ahead of the Stellenbosch match.

Chiefs Await Final Fitness Decisions Before Tuesday

Petersen’s return to individual training provides encouragement for Kaizer Chiefs, but the captain’s availability remains unresolved as the club prepares for a significant league fixture.

Maboe’s ankle injury and the continued absence of Phili and Ndlovu also leave Da Cruz with important decisions to make before naming his starting lineup.

With Chiefs seeking to close the gap on Sundowns, Pirates and AmaZulu, the outcome against Stellenbosch could prove important to their early-season ambitions. For now, the club’s priority will be assessing its recovering players and ensuring that those selected are fit enough to help secure a positive result at FNB Stadium.
