Following Kenny Kunene’s brief tenure as Joburg mayor, councillor Kabelo Gwamanda has resumed his position as the official mayor.
Upon his return, Mayor Gwamanda immediately took action to address the concerns raised by residents of Fleurhof.
City Responds to Fleurhof Residents’ Concerns
The City of Johannesburg’s Revenue Protection Team swiftly responded to the issues raised by Fleurhof residents on Friday, May 19.
They promptly removed illegal electricity connections in the area after the mayor received a memorandum from the protesting residents.
Mayor’s Assurance to Residents
In response to the community’s concerns, Mayor Gwamanda assured the residents that his office would provide a response within the next seven days.
He emphasized that the Executive Mayor had instructed the City Manager and his executive to develop a comprehensive plan to tackle the challenges faced in the area.
City’s Interventions and Task Team
To expedite the City’s interventions, the Acting Chief Operations Officer and senior officials held a meeting to establish an urgent multi-disciplinary war room.
A task team was formed to address the specific issues raised by the community in Fleurhof.
Mayor Gwamanda acknowledged that there are other urgent matters in different regions of the City, but they decided to focus on targeted service delivery in Fleurhof for the time being.
Engagement with Other Spheres of Government
While recognizing that some of the issues raised by the community fall under the responsibility of other spheres of government, Mayor Gwamanda assured the residents that the City would engage in intergovernmental relations to find lasting solutions.
They intend to collaborate with relevant counterparts to address the community’s concerns effectively.
Commitment to Stable and Responsive Government
After being elected as mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda emphasized that the Government of Local Unity (GLU) is dedicated to maintaining a stable, functional, responsive, and service-oriented government.
He prioritized the stability and efficient functioning of the City, promising to uphold decorum, commitment, and diligence in leading Johannesburg.
